I purchased this unit through a promotion from the Philadelphia Inquirer. Since I already subscribed to
that newspaper and get it delivered, I gave the Arnova 10 G2 unit a
shot. Basically, my wife and I are happy with it; for what we use it
for, it works. I will drop the physical delivery of the paper because I
can read it on the tablet. The Inquirer bundled a viewing application
specific for newspaper reading, and it works well enough.

That
being said, there are some fair criticisms of the unit. The screen pretty much is only useable by one person at a
time because of the viewing angle limitations. It does not yet hook up to
the larger app market. Let's face it, the unit is not an iPad. :)

But
I was able to download some apps from Amazon - like a Netflix app for
Androids, and it works well. For viewing a movie streaming over the
wireless network by one person, the screen is actually pretty good. I
use headphones for the sound. Overall, the movie viewing experience is
more than adequate.

My wife and I both listen to radio on it, via
another app available for this unit, and that works fine also. Although
the built-in speakers are not high quality, one cannot expect great,
full spectrum sound coming out of speakers from any tablet of this type.
For basic radio listening, particularly news and talk, the built-in
speakers are okay.

The unit easily hooked into our home wireless network. All in all, a relatively decent value for the money.

Hi Dave, thanks for replying. I was able to figure it out. I downloaded and installed it, and yes it works fine for me too. Overall, my wife and I are satisfied with the unit. It works for what we want to use it for, which includes reading the Inquirer. I am confident enough in reading the paper via the tablet now, that I am going to stop physical delivery except for weekends - where my wife still likes to have the coupons in hand. :)

Thanks Dave. I tried to download the Netflix app, but I had trouble navigating to the point where I could sign in and download it. Is there a trick to installing the Amazon Netflix app on the Phillytablet?

Okay, so I got one for Christmas. Took a week to finally get the Appslib website on my computer because it was "down for maintenance". I have no troubles as far as touch screen (very sensitive and to Rose, it can be calibrated to how sensitive you want it to be..it shouldn't "hurt" any fingers. Yes, there is a touch keyboard, just have to tap the box into which you want to type. My charge is okay, my screen is sharp and clear, it rotates fine (and yes it does rotate with movement). So here is my most major issue and hence it will likely get returned--by following the instructions, I connect my Arnova to the internet via the USB to my computer. Go to Appslib (that is finally back online) and hit download on a simple and free game. What do I get???? MY DEVICE IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH APPSLIB! No further instructions, options or otherwise. No way to call tech support, because OMG! they don't have a phone number! Appslib is run out of HONG KONG...not even calling there. And Arnova offers no local or 800 number either. We updated the root thing...my son's the techie one and BAM! there goes my icons. Had to find the file and reinstall them...just to get that my Android run, Arnova based "PhillyTablet" is not compatible with any thing. So, I've gotten on Facebook once, my email several times because it will tell you that you have to have a GMail account LINKED to an Android Mobile service. Now, I don't have a cell phone, don't want one. BUT my son does and to no avail even using his account...NOT COMPATIBLE! Reset it, didn't help. Just wondering...ANYONE else with this problem or who can offer advise!? Thanks!

can you please pass on the email address for the return? I received one of these as a gift and need to return it via the manufacturer warranty because it is defective.. came on once, and will no longer accept a charge with the adapter or the USB cord...very strange...
I cannot find a contact for Archos online for the problem either? thank u much!

If you want to make it so zfs doesn't recognise the drive, you have to zero out the area zfs uses to store the drives GUID. Once that's done you can reuse it in the pool. dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sde in this case. Then you can reuse the disk. It even tells you this must be done manually:

the following errors must be manually repaired:

/dev/sde is part of active pool 'media'

Though it doesn't tell you how to fix it. ZFS pretty much is preventing you shooting yourself in the foot by nuking what could be an active drive.

ZFS also doesn't care where the disks are, it relies on GUID's in the meta data it places on the disk. Shift your disks around all you like and it'll find them where ever they are and reconstruct the pool accordingly. Try running: zdb poolname you'll see what I mean

After the Amazon Fire Kindle came out, Amazon has been adding a ton of new apps to the Amazon app store. The Netflix app was a welcome addition - and it works great on the Phillytablet (Arnova 10G2) Didn't have to do anything special, just install it from the Amazon App store.

Since you've had this unit for a couple of months, I'm just wondering if you have any additional comments, suggestions or tips. I just ordered the unit as part of the newspaper special, and I'm wondering if I'll be able to use the tablet for other things, like email - using a basic browser, Netfilx, etc. Does the operating system give you the ability to type - like with a virtual keyboard interface, for email? Thank you.

Cwing, there is a reset switch behind the very tiny hole next to the power plug. It looks like you need a needle or something else really skinny, but stiff enough to press the button inside. My guess is that it will reset the machine back to factory fresh state, and you will likely lose all your pictures and Email, and any apps you installed. But you have nothing to lose.

I have netflix from the amazon store, (didn't offer it to the fire came out go figure) and it's running great look for alot more of your favorite apps now that amazon has thrown it's own hat into the tablet arena.

Doesn't seem to want to let me use any of the free Amazon Apps downloaded from Amazon. Where the heck is "Words with Friends" in AppsLib. Everybody plays that and it is no where to be found. I am ok with the Daily News and Inquirer downloads. I like them actually but wish they would also download the advertisement circulars included with the paper for that day "it's Christmas Time, Need to see the sales"!! If Appslib doesn't have enough apps, allow Amazon Apps to be active, they have the apps Appslib doesn't! Pretty good for a value tablet, but work on the apps (Netflix, Vudu, Blockbuster, Google Maps, etc)

sorry to say the Mr. didn't really care for it. He is 73 and tap on the screen hurts his fingers, he would rather do a gentel press that did not work. The screen got so smudged that you could not see it. The wi fi did not work well, because Verison service was to low, so he could not download anything the instruction book the print was sooooo small you needed a magnifying glass to read how to charge it. the button to turn it on was so small it was almost invisible. I guess for disabled senior citizens the good old news print is the best way to go. I just wish we didn't live in a digital world. Life was much simpler then

How long should I let this tablet charge before using it. I just got one today and It would come on and It seem as if it does want to charge. I hate that I had to snap the USA plug on...I just want to see if it will work...Can anybody Help me with getting it Charged up????

I too bought the Arnova 10 G2 whilst in Hong Kong, I was talked into it after wanting to buy an Ipad 2, I stupidly let them talk me into it thinking it was going to be better, there claim was that you could download games and books free where on the IPad you had to pay for them, I have since been told some are free on the IPad too. The thing that urks me most is that I cannot open anything now, all I get is the word ARNOVA on the screen for a couple of seconds then nothing. I have sent two emails to the company but have not received an answer as yet. If anybody can tell me what to do I would appreciate it.

I'm a zfs-fuse and zfs in kernel developer.

You should add your drives using the /dev/disk/by-id directory. That way the drive will be picked up consistently regardless of the device node in /dev/.

ivi.tv's situation seems dire, indeed. But there are other companies out there with a more legal take on streaming tv, and i think it is indicative of a trend towards consumers getting their content via streaming sources, and content providers slowly, but surely, recognizing this trend, and forming more appropriate solutions to the increasing demand for online content.

byron allen's Smart.TV recently released half-a-dozen apps that provide both video-on-demand and streaming live video on a variety of subjects - apps like 'comedy.tv', 'pets.tv', and 'recipe.tv' are helping lead the way for media companies to embrace the emergence of a solid streaming media market. and there's companies like Mediafly, who are providing more and more businesses with an easy way to stream their multimedia content to consumers...

i cant say im really surprised ivi.tv is getting sued, it seems kind of similar to the recent ninjavideo lawsuit. it would be one thing if there was no charge for the content, and the ivi folks weren't making money off their product. If that was the case, sympathy for their situation could be warranted. but if they're just ripping other people's content, and then selling it, it becomes a less admirable effort...
